August 2013

Dear Parents, Students, Friends, and Community:

As we prepare for another school year I am genuinely excited to share with you some of the cutting edge educational innovations that the Hemet Unified School District is implementing for the upcoming year. This year we will implement our first year of a three-year Rigorous Curriculum Design (RCD) Master Plan. The first of three main phases for this year will be to implement the Math and ELA units designed by the RCD committee. Secondly, we will maintain our Data Teams while constantly measuring the effectiveness of our educational progress. Finally, our third piece will be to build a culture of celebration, rewards and support to recognize student and staff accomplishments. Needless to say, we have embarked on a very historic journey.

We will closely monitor the progress of these three goals by measuring our student graduation rates, our students' ability to enter a competitive workforce and the readiness factor of our students to succeed in post-secondary institutions of higher learning. Our Professional Development Coaches will continue to support our schools and teachers in our curriculum roll out. We will also implement a site-based instructional coaching model which is designed to increase student achievement by building teacher capacity through the implementation of effective instructional practices.

We are also very encouraged with the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and feel the shift from a general purpose funding revenue model to a model based on Hemet USD's demographic profile will ensure an equitable funding model for all our schools. The additional supplemental and concentration grants, in conjunction with our new Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), will provide needed funds for all of our programs including the Common Core roll out.

Truly these are exciting times for public education. We continue to encourage all of our parents to take an active role in their student's education. Students, I also urge you to take full advantage of our schools wide range of co-curricular programs including the fine arts, athletics, student clubs and our after school SAFE program. By experiencing a well-rounded academic and co-curricular program you will enhance your ability to be successful in the 21st Century.

Thank you in advance for all your support. We look forward to a positive and productive school year. Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any specific questions or comments.
