School Description
There is no cost to families for our school.
The Family Tree Learning Center is one of Hemet
Unified School District's Alternative Educational Schools. It opened in January 2004 and now serves over 250 K-8 students. The Family Tree Learning Center's public
education option is in place to support families who have made the
commitment to provide student learning at home. The school provides a unique opportunity for students to learn in alternative ways through hands on lessons, curriculum based field trips, computer technology and web based lessons. Programs for Gifted and Talented (GATE) students also exist to support advanced learning.
At Home with Project-Based Learning

In this household, you’ll discover a family of motivated children, supportive parents, and a lot of enthusiasm – all the right ingredients for independent educational success. Many of our teaching methods blossomed from assignments the Hines children (various grade levels) have been using as students of Family Tree Learning Center.
Just recently Brenda, the mother of three sons and the guardian of a niece and nephew, turned the children’s workroom into an enterprise for project-based learning. Through collaborative efforts between the parent and a credentialed FTLC teacher, these five highly motivated and independent students are creating a model society based on an on idea that took root while watching a television program
It’s the kind of education that allows students to integrate as well as explore what they’re learning in all core subjects — math, social studies, science, and language arts. In this way, they apply such knowledge to one particular project. Not least of all, it’s the kind of all-encompassing assignment which parents and teacher alike find constructive and focused.
“One of the things I like about this is that I see the kids involved, really excited, and they’re actually learning at the same time,” said Brenda, who admitted to finding herself excited about the children’s own enthusiasm for learning by doing.
