About Our Class
Dear
Parents and Students,
Welcome to Room C7's
website! You will find a wealth of information
about school and class events on our Class Website! The Thematic Links and
Student Links provide access to
educational websites that correlate with our 2nd grade curriculum.
School and classroom information as well as a Calendar of
Events will help you in keeping up to date in your child's
education.
Parent-Teacher-Student Communication:
Please talk to your child daily about his or her experience
in school. One way to ensure that you’ll be kept up to date
on the events in your child’s education is through the
Classroom Newsletter students will be sent home with
students every Friday. This newsletter will cover
any upcoming events, student highlights, what your child has
been learning in school, reminders for parents, etc.
Students will also be writing daily in a spiral Parent
Letter Notebook (PLN). Your child will write you a
letter about classroom news and other important
highlights. This is also excellent writing practice for
students. Please read the daily letter and initial daily
in order to keep constant communication between home and
school. Feel free to write back to your child as well!
The most exciting way to get involved with your child’s
education is to visit this class website often. I designed
this site for parents and students to stay informed and more
importantly, to supplement students’ learning in class.
Please visit the links of educational, enriching websites
that relate to our curriculum and 2nd grade
standards.
Please
contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Also, any
feedback regarding how I can make this site better would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Classroom
Management:

My goal as a teacher is to create an environment in the
classroom in which children WANT to learn, WANT to behave
appropriately, and WANT to achieve. Cawston Elementary
has adopted the character education program called Peacebuilders.
Students learn that a peacebuilder will always Praise People, Give
Up Putdowns, Notice Hurts, Right Wrongs, and Help Others (see link
below for more information on this excellent program!) In this
way, students are supported in learning how to make good choices
inside the classroom and hopefully contributing to their overall
social development.
C7's Class Rules:
(Power Rules)
Big Rule: Respect Everyone
1.
Follow Directions Quickly
2.
Raise your hand for permission to speak
3.
Always give 100% effort
4.
Make Smart Choices!
5.
Keep your dear teacher happy

Positive Reinforcement
Individual:
I
believe that it is important to reward those “Super Star” students
who have continual good behavior, complete their assignments, and do
their absolute best work. These rewards will range from praise,
special classroom privileges/jobs, earning Cawston Coins and tickets
for the weekly raffle, and more.
Whole-class:
Students
in my class learn from the beginning of the year to work together in
groups. Table groups will earn points each day when caught working
together, being kind to one another, and staying on task. Rewards
will be given on Fridays to the table group with the most points.
Students also work together as a class to work productively, follow
directions, and contribute to the lessons and discussions.
Negative Reinforcement
Unfortunately,
teaching social development and using positive reinforcement
does not always work in every situation.
The
class clip chart is used to remind students what level of
behavior he/she is acting on. If a student does not follow the
classroom rules, he or she will move his/her clip on our chart. All
students begin every day on green (Super Stars). Below green is
blue (warning), yellow (time-out) or red (time-out,
lose recess, etc). If a student gets to red, the student
will be responsible for completing an "Uh-Oh" slip, a
self-evaluative behavior slip, and will take it home for parent
signature. Please read and discuss this with your child and
talk about goals in improving. Students may miss out on Friday Fun,
recess, field trips, or other activities if I feel it is necessary.
You will know on a daily basis how your child’s day was by
reading and signing the Parent Letter Notebook found in the H.W.
folder. Please always talk to your child about his/her day.
My goal is to create a good relationship and
communication with parents so that every student's academics
and behavior will be successful!

Star of
the Week:
I believe
each student should have a chance to shine in
the spotlight,
therefore, each week I will choose 1 student to be “Star of the
Week.” Stars of the Week are responsible for decorating and
filling out a Star of the Week poster, which will be given to
the student on Friday to complete over the weekend. In
addition, students may bring in special objects to
show-and-tell. These objects should not include any
of those not allowed at school (i.e. video games, toy guns, dice,
etc). Pictures are encouraged and will be used to decorate the
bulletin board dedicated to the Star of the Week student. All
pictures and special things will be returned with the student on
Friday.
Homework
Policy:

Every Friday, students will receive a Weekly
Newsletter and H.W. Packet with checklist for the following week's assignments
(Monday-Thursday). This H.W. checklist will include the
spelling and vocabulary words students will be tested on on the
following Friday.
Students should work on the H.W. packet DAILY (see checklist) and
completed H.W. packet is due on Friday.
Homework each night consists of:
1)
Reading an Accelerated Reader book for 20-30 minutes.
Each night students will come home with an Accelerated Reader book.
The following day they should be ready to take a quiz on this book
(unless it is a chapter book). Students in 2nd grade work on reading
comprehension (understanding the book) and reading fluency (reading
with speed and expression). Please sign the Reading Log
portion of the H.W. sheet every night.
2)
EnVision Math page (two sides)
Every night students will work on a worksheet that reflects the
day's math lesson. I also encourage students to practice math
facts using flashcards or online math facts resources. There
are many listed under our Student Links
page.
3) Spelling or Vocabulary
Practice
Each night students will have a different practice activity in their
H.W. packets Students are responsible for knowing their
spelling words and vocabulary definitions. Students are tested
on these words every Friday.
4) Weekly Concept
Worksheets There will also be worksheets that correspond
to the weekly math and language arts concepts.
Students
who do not complete their nightly homework will be benched for recess
so that they may complete it. If
your child cannot complete his/her homework due to family
circumstances, please write me a note. Finally, please check your child’s homework each and every night...completed
homework is crucial to your child’s success in 2nd
grade.

Volunteers
Parent
volunteers are always welcome and appreciated. Please fill
out the Parent Survey sent home with your child or email me for
your availability. Even if you cannot come into the class
due to child-care, I would be happy to send things home.
Please let me know if you have any special talents, hobbies, or
career that you could share with our 2nd graders.
