As the Hemet Unified School District enters the twenty-first century, it is the Governing Board's responsibility to ensure each child's education to the fullest of his or her potential by fulfilling four objectives:
- Vision: Establishing the vision for education in the District.
- Structure: Establishing the structure and environment to implement the vision.
- Accountability: Setting academic performance standards and providing services to assist those not experiencing success.
- Advocacy: Speaking out strongly for the public schools and their students.

Norms
- The Board's basic decision making frame is "what is best for students".
- Board members will debate issues with vigor, disagree when appropriate, but remain respectful of other board members and staff during the process.
- Each board member's viewpoint is valuable to the group and will be heard and respected.
- Each board member is responsible for expressing his/her viewpoint in an open and honest manner during the meetings and prior to a decision on any issue.
- Each board member commits to review materials prior to meetings and to fully prepare for each board meeting.
- Once the Board votes on an issue and a decision is reached, all board members will abide by the Board's decision.
- Board members will work with and through the Superintendent and staff to address concerns within the district.
- Board members will respect the administrative sphere of activity led by the Superintendent and the Superintendent and staff will respect the Board's sphere of activity in policy making and fiscal oversight.

2011 Board Member Committee Appointments

Career and Technical Education:
The Vocational Education Committee maintains open lines of communication among high schools with career/technical education programs, the community and education partners such as MSJC and Riverside County Regional Occupational Program. The committee shares information and gives and receives input with regard to the various career/technical education initiatives in our valley. (Meetings scheduled as needed, approximately 3 or 4 times a school year with the next meeting on January 13, 2011, refreshments at 5:00 p.m., meeting 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., in the board room.

Curriculum Council:
The Curriculum Council is composed of a majority of teachers and may include administrators, other staff with subject-matter expertise, parents/guardians, community members and students. The committee reviews, evaluates and recommends instructional materials for Board approval. (Meetings scheduled in October, December, February and May, with the next meetings on February 3, 2011 and May 5, 2011, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. at the PDSC.)

Facilities Committee:
The Board Facilities Committee consists of three appointed board members who meet periodically with the facilities staff to preview plans, designs, proposed school sites, renovations, and other facilities related issues. The purpose of the committee is to provide board input to the facilities staff prior to submittal to the entire Board. (Meetings scheduled as needed usually on board meeting Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. immediately preceding the board meeting in the superintendent's conference room.)

Governmental Relations Committee:
The Board Governmental Relations Committee consists of three appointed board members who meet with the Superintendent as the need arises to have informal interaction with elected officials from other governmental agencies. (Meetings scheduled as needed.)

Head Start Parent Policy Committee:
The Head Start Parent Policy Committee is a federally mandated committee composed of parents elected from each Head Start site and acts as advisors and works with the Governing Board and Head Start staff on issues related to budgets, policies, staff composition, curriculum and program delivery. (The next meeting is December 16, 2010 from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Preschool Office located at the old Hemet Elementary campus on Kimball and Santa Fe. Thereafter, meetings are scheduled for every second Thursday, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Hemet Elementary Preschool Office.)

Recognition and Awards Committee:
The Board Recognition and Awards Committee meets yearly to select student recipients of HUSD Governing Board Scholarships prior to submittal to entire Board for approval. (Meeting scheduled once a year in April.)

Riverside County Committee on School District Organization: Appoint a representative to be a voting delegate for Hemet Unified School District to participate in the election for members of the joint Riverside San Bernardino School Board Association (RSBSBA). The election is scheduled by RCOE on a yearly basis and is usually held immediately prior to the joint RSBSBA meeting. (Meetings scheduled once a year by RCOE.)

Wellness/Nutrition Committee:
The Board Wellness/Nutrition Committee consists of appointed board members who meet regularly with staff from Educational Services and Nutrition Services to provide board input into the nutrition and wellness policies and practices prior to submittal to the entire Board for approval. (Meeting dates are February 10, and April 21, 2011 and in November 2011. The meetings will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the PDSC conference room 201.)
